Shillong, Aug 1: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has asked the Higher and Technical Education Department to address all problems being faced by Kiang Nangbah College, Jowai including release of salary to teaching and non-teaching staff which has been pending since October last year.
The PAC gave this directive while summoning officials of the department after taking sou moto of various problems raised by students of the college.
PAC chairman, Paul Lyngdoh told reporters that the committee questioned the delay in the construction of boys’ hostel sanctioned at over Rs 1.12 crore even as officials informed the PAC that 40 per cent of the remaining works could not be taken up by a contractor due to non availability of fund. The PAC was informed that the contractor has now resumed the work.
The other issues raised by the PAC include the meager salary of Rs 5,000 per month paid to 26 teachers and the non release of salary to the 26 teaching staff and 9 non-teaching staff (appointed on contractual basis) since October last year till date.
The PAC also questioned officials of the higher and technical education and PWD (buildings) over the delay to extend the college building as well as procurement of materials for the college though Rs 2 crore was sanctioned under Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a scheme for development of higher education initiated by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.
Lyngdoh said that the PAC has asked the officials of the concern departments to reply to all queries in detail and solve all problems faced by college at the earliest.
