PDF lists out promises in manifesto for polls to district councils

Shillong, Feb 14: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) on Thursday released its election manifesto for the upcoming district council polls slated to be held on February 27.

The 10-point manifesto was released by PDF president, Ibanlumlang Marbañiang, working president and cabinet minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh besides party workers and candidates of the party.

The PDF is contesting in 24 seats which include 15 in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and 9 seats in the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

Speaking to reporters, Marbañiang said the party assured to come up with clear cut laws to preserve the customary and land rights of the indigenous people as empowered through the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Asserting the need to strengthen the traditional institutions, he said the party also proposed to set up different committees to improve and streamline the functioning of the district councils in Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills.

The party also promised in its manifesto to come up with mechanisms to check illegal entry of outsiders and take steps address unemployment problems faced by the local youth, and to protect and preserve the environment.
