People of Dangar face problem in depositing and withdrawing money

Shillong Nov 16: People of Dangar village and nearby villages under Mawsynram Block in East Khasi Hills district along the Indo-Bangla border are still facing problem in depositing and withdrawing money since only one bank is catering to people from more than 40 villages.

People have to stand in long queues outside the bank for several hours to be able to to deposit and withdraw their money as there is only UCO bank transacting business in the area. People visited the bank early in the morning to but many people could not get the chance to either withdraw or deposit their money due to heavy rush.

The misery is such that people from Sonatola and Pyndemborsora villages started from home at midnight in order to reach the bank early in the morning to be the first to stand on queue.

What is more painful is that senior citizens were considered as general public and have to visit the bank for more than a week even to withdraw an amount of two to three thousand rupees only.

Many of those who came to the bank were also job card holders who wanted to withdraw cash after their wages have been credited into their bank accounts.

P. Wanniang from Balat village, said it was heartbreaking to witness agony of people who have to face the problem while withdrawing and depositing their money due to heavy rush public.

“There are people who collapsed while standing in queues which also led to clash among the public,” the villagers said.

The worse situation was witnessed on market day as hundreds of people came to the bank but the bank can take only within 300 customers, Wanniang said.

H Thangbiarlun, Branch Manager of the Bank said, the main reason that the public have to be face the problem because only one bank is available in the area besides shortage of staff leading to heavy workload.

The villagers said that they had brought the problem to the the MLA/MDC of Mawsynram constituency, P.N Syiem and urged him to take up the matter with the government but to no avail.
