Police look to nab miscreants who torch trucks at FCI premises

Shillong, Apr 29: Police are yet to nab miscreants involved in torching two trucks at the FCI godown, Mawlai here on Sunday midnight.

One of the trucks parked in the FCI premises was loaded with rice. The rice was to be unloaded from the truck to the FCI godown.

East Khasi Hills district superintendent of police, Claudia Lyngwa the incident happened during the load shedding period at around 12 am.

One truck has been damaged severely and the one loaded with sacks of rice was partially damaged. The rice that was to be unloaded from truck to FCI godown was also spoiled.

Police said that the trucks caught fire after miscreants lobbed with petrol bombs.

The arson took place few days after one Meghalaya home guard was killed at the FCI Khanapara allegedly by truck drivers from Assam.

Lyngwa said that FCI authorities have been told few days ago that trucks loaded with rice should unload the food grains and leave the area as part of the precautionary measure in view of the incident at Khanapara last week.

Lyngwa said fire could not spread to other buildings within the FCI premises due to timely arrival of police and fire tenders who could douse the fire.

The SP said that investigation is on to identify people involved in the incident.

Security at the FCI, Mawlai has been beefed up after the incident.
