Political leaders share expectations from Assembly polls

Shillong, March 01: Two days before the counting, political parties in Meghalaya expressed confidence of winning and shared their expectations from this Assembly election held in 59 out of 60 seats on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma who contested from two seats – Ampati and Songsak said that Congress would come back to power.

“We will win with a comfortable majority and form the government,” the chief minister exuded confidence.

The Congress contested in all 59 out of 60 seats that went to polls.

Congress MP and MPCC working president, Vincent H. Pala said that his party would get more than 30 seats and it will also do well from Garo Hills.

NPP state president, Dr Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi said that his party expected that the party would do well as candidates of the party gave a tough fight in many Assembly seats.

“We expect that we will get 19 to 23 seats,” Dr Kharlukhi said.

BJP state president, Shibun Lyngdoh said that the party expected that it will get around 12 seats.

“We will do this in this elections especially in constituencies in Jaiñtiaq Hills, Shillong City and plain belts of Garo Hills,” Lyngdoh said.

He said that despite negative campaign against the BJP, this would not affect the party.

“People have already understood our agenda of development,” Lyngdoh stated.

UDP senior leader, Bindo Lanong said that among all parties, the UDP would emerge as the single largest party.

“We will emerge as the single largest party but even with alliance partners, we may not get the required number. We will definitely look for friends to form the government together. We put that we will get between 17 and 18,” Lanong said.

Asked if the UDP would consider BJP as one of the like-minded parties, Lanong said, “so far, the BJP is not a like-minded party.”
