Digital image portrays Conrad Sangma as “Boss” amid speculation over NPP leadership and UDP’s political future
Shillong, September 9: A digitally edited image circulating on social media has sparked fresh debate over the political equation within the National People’s Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government.
The satirical image depicts Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma standing on a rock amid turbulent waters and extending a hand towards Deputy Chief Ministers Sniawbhalang Dhar and Prestone Tynsong, while several United Democratic Party (UDP) leaders are shown struggling in the water below.
The apparent message—“Whom will he save, and who will sink in such a situation?”—appears intended to raise questions about political influence, leadership dynamics and the future of coalition partners.
Sangma is portrayed as the “Boss”, while Dhar and Tynsong are marked “1” and “2”, respectively. The symbolism appears to allude to speculation surrounding the political standing and influence of the two Deputy Chief Ministers within the ruling NPP.
Dhar, however, has recently dismissed reports of internal differences within the party. He maintained that there was no “huri-hura” or disturbance in the NPP and asserted that the Conrad Sangma-led MDA 2.0 Government would complete its full term. He also denied reports of differences involving himself, the Chief Minister and Tynsong.
NPP’s strengthened numerical position
The political relevance of the satire also stems from the changed numerical strength of the ruling coalition.
The NPP won 26 seats in the 2023 Meghalaya Assembly election and initially depended on coalition partners to form the Government. Subsequent political developments increased the party’s strength to 33 legislators in the 60-member House.
With the NPP now above the simple-majority mark, the party is in a considerably stronger position and is less dependent on coalition partners such as the UDP and BJP for the Government’s survival.
The MDA continues to include the UDP, BJP and Hill State People’s Democratic Party, besides enjoying support from other legislators. However, the NPP’s numerical strength means the Government could remain stable even in the event of political changes involving one of its coalition partners.
UDP-BJP speculation adds to uncertainty
The depiction of UDP leaders “sinking” comes amid speculation that a section of the party’s legislators could shift allegiance to the BJP.
Reports had suggested that nine of the UDP’s 12 MLAs travelled to Delhi and could consider joining the BJP. UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh rejected the speculation, saying none of the party legislators had informed him of any intention to leave.
Lyngdoh said the delegation’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah was related to Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) clearances and other pending matters concerning Meghalaya, and not any proposed defection or merger.
Speculation has nevertheless continued, particularly following reports that former UDP general secretary Dr Jemino Mawthoh is expected to join the BJP.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has indicated that political developments within either the UDP or BJP would not threaten the stability of his Government. The NPP’s strengthened numbers have allowed him to project the MDA administration as secure irrespective of possible changes among its allies.
Satire, not evidence of a political split
The image brings together three themes dominating political speculation in Meghalaya—the strengthened position of Conrad Sangma, perceived competition between the two Deputy Chief Ministers, and uncertainty surrounding the UDP’s political future.
By portraying the Chief Minister as the person deciding whom to rescue, the graphic suggests that the political survival of other leaders and coalition partners depends on Sangma.
However, the image itself provides no evidence of an actual split, leadership change or impending collapse of the MDA coalition. It should therefore be viewed as political satire reflecting public speculation rather than confirmation of any political development.
Nevertheless, the graphic captures a growing perception that the balance of power within MDA 2.0 has shifted significantly in favour of Conrad Sangma and the NPP following the party’s emergence with a majority of its own in the Assembly.
