Shillong, August 12, 2025 – In Pyngkya village, War Mawkynrew Block, poor road access and lack of transport have long meant that farm produce like fruits and vegetables often rotted in the fields. Determined to end such waste, local farmer Kong Tharina Umsong formed the IOHLYNTI Group on July 4, 2017, with the help of her children.
The group’s mission is to transform crops such as maize, fruits, and vegetables into ready-to-eat or value-added products. Speaking at the Independence Day Market Local Entrepreneur event, organised by Fabulous at All Saints Cathedral from August 11–14, Kong Tharina’s daughter, Baladap Shisha Umsong, said the group now counts 10 active members.
IOHLYNTI produces juice, pickles, jams, chips, snacks, and especially maize-based items — a vital crop for the village, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kong Tharina credits training from EFC Basin Mawkynrew Block and support from agencies such as the Directorate of Food Processing, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), and most recently, Prime Hub Meghalaya, which has helped promote their work.
All products are chemical-free, and Prime Hub Meghalaya’s markets have allowed the group to reach wider audiences. The initiative benefits not just its members but the entire Pyngkya community by creating shelf-stable food, reducing wastage, ensuring food security during crises, and providing jobs for local youth.
Expressing her gratitude, Kong Tharina said, “Prime Hub Meghalaya has given us the platform to bring Pyngkya’s food products to more people.”
