Shillong, Aug 21: Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel and police were deployed at Khyndai Lad on Friday after the East Khasi Hills district administration withdrew permission granted to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to hold a sit-in demonstration in front of the Old Assembly building.
The KSU had planned to continue its agitation over what it described as the state government’s failure to fulfil its demands. The union had earlier clarified that only members of its Central Executive Council would participate in the protest.
However, the district administration subsequently revoked the permission in view of the recent violence reported during the KSU’s motorcycle rally in Shillong.
Security was tightened across Khyndai Lad, with magistrates accompanying police and RAF personnel deployed in the area.
Commercial vehicles routinely used to pick up and drop off passengers were also moved away from Khyndai Lad as part of the security measures.
