Nongpoh, September 29: The Ri-Bhoi Youth Development and Social Organisation (RBYDSO) has urged the district administration and police authorities to remove vehicles parked for long periods at police stations across Ri-Bhoi district, saying the vehicles are obstructing public movement and affecting the cleanliness and appearance of police station premises.
The organisation raised the issue during meetings with the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Ri-Bhoi, pointing to police stations in Nongpoh, Byrnihat, Umiam and other areas where vehicles involved in various cases have remained parked for extended periods.
According to the RBYDSO, many of the vehicles are connected with ongoing legal cases arising from accidents, disputes and other incidents, and their owners have not yet been able to take possession of them.
The organisation said the accumulation of vehicles has made some police station premises appear overcrowded and, in certain locations, resemble vehicle storage yards rather than functioning police facilities.
The RBYDSO also highlighted concerns over the condition of areas where the vehicles have been parked. It said damaged and accident-involved vehicles have remained exposed for long periods, while garbage and other waste have accumulated around them.
The organisation said the situation has also affected the appearance of roads and public areas surrounding some police stations and raised concerns among commuters and visitors.
During their meeting with the DC and SP, RBYDSO leaders requested that the vehicles be shifted to an alternative location where they could be kept safely until the respective cases are resolved.
They said such a move would allow the police station premises to be cleaned and maintained properly while also improving the overall appearance of the facilities.
RBYDSO president Arnod Syngkli said the appearance of several police stations in Ri-Bhoi had deteriorated because vehicles had remained parked there for years.
He alleged that some of the spaces had gradually become dumping areas for garbage and discarded liquor bottles and other waste due to the lack of proper maintenance.
The organisation has therefore appealed to the district administration and police department to take appropriate steps to relocate the vehicles and restore cleanliness and order around the police station premises.
