Nongpoh, June 10: The Indian National Congress has suffered a setback in Ri Bhoi district following the resignation of one of its senior and active leaders, Rocky Marwein, who stepped down from the party on Wednesday.

Marwein, who had been serving as the President of the Ri Bhoi District Congress Committee since 2025, submitted his resignation letter as both a party member and a key office bearer. He later formally handed over the letter to the President of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee.

A committed grassroots leader, Marwein has long been considered an active organiser within the party, consistently involved in strengthening Congress activities and mobilising support in the region. Prior to his role as district president, he had also served as the President of the Umsning Block Congress Committee.

He had contested the MDC elections in 2019 and again in 2025, but was unsuccessful on both occasions. Despite electoral setbacks, he continued to play an important role in party organisation and remained closely associated with the leadership, including supporting Umsning MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh even during periods of political transition.

Speaking over the phone, Marwein clarified that he has not yet taken any decision regarding joining any other political party. He stated that he would first consult with his supporters and associates before deciding his next course of action, including whether to continue public service independently, remain unaffiliated, or join another political platform.

He emphasized that his resignation was from the Congress party alone and not an immediate shift to another political organisation.

The development marks another instance of organisational churn within the Congress in the region, even as the party continues to face leadership realignments at various levels.
