Rs 1.2 crore cash seized so far in poll-bound Meghalaya

Shillong, Feb 26: Over Rs 1.2 crore was seized in Meghalaya since the announcement of election on January 16 .

Meghalaya will go to polls in 59 out of 60 seats on Tuesday.

The election in Williamnagar has been adjourned after the death of NCP candidate, Jonathone N. Sangma in an IED blast in East Garo Hills district on February 18.

Besides cash, liquor, explosives and other materials related to violation of the model code of conduct were seized by election authorities since January 16, the day when model code of conduct came into force in the state.

On Monday, cash worth Rs 38.67 lakh was seized from a scorpio having no registration plate on the national highway at Lad Smit about 15 km from here.

The cash was seized from one L. Lamare.

“Till date, surveillance teams and flying squads have seized cash of over Rs 1.2 crore from various parts of the state,” Meghalaya chief electoral officer, F.R. Kharkongor told reporters.

Over 30000 litres of liquor, one explosive from West Shillong constituency were also seized so far.

Cash and other materials were seized following tip-off and during regular checking of vehicles by the surveillance teams and flying squads across the state.

Kharkongor said that cash seized over Rs 10 lakh was handed over to income tax officials for further investigation.
