Shillong Mar 29: Income Tax (IT) officials and District Election Officers (DEOs) are keeping a close vigil on suspicious transactions (STRs) in banks in view of the upcoming elections to the two Lok Sabha constituencies to be held on April 11.
Chief Electoral Officer, F.R. Kharkongor said that Static Surveillance Team (SST) and flying squads are also on high alert.
On Friday, the SST seized Rs 3 lakh in East Jaiñtia Hills district under Shillong Lok Sabha constituency.
The cash was seized from a person hailing from Mynso village under Khliehriat.
As the person claimed that the money was meant for buying Shaktiman truck, the matter was referred to a committee headed by the DEO for further verification.
Close to Rs 30 lakh cash besides liquor has been seized so far, after the model code of conduct came into force. An individual can carry cash within Rs 50,000.
In South West Khasi Hills district, the BSF personnel had seized Rs 20 lakh last week, while Rs 2.5 lakh was seized in East Garo Hills district, and Rs 3 lakh in South West Garo Hills district.
