SCPCR chairperson examined on sexual assault case of 14-year old girl

One sentenced to jail term for attempted rape

Shillong, July 11: The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) chairperson Meena Kharkongor was examined by the POCSO Court in connection with the trafficking and sexual assault of a 14-year old girl.

Rape accused MLA, Julius Dorphang along with others – who were arrested for their direct and indirect involvement – was also produced before the Court as the trial of the case has begun here on Tuesday.

“I being the complainant of the case was examined in the Court,” Kharkongor said.

The chairperson of the SCPCR had filed series of FIRs against many people including the Dorphang, who is also a former chairman of the Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).
Two FIRs have been registered against him based on the statements made by the victim (girl) who identified his photograph as one among the accused. One FIR was filed in Laitumkhrah police station, and the other in Ri-Bhoi district.

The other accused arrested include five pimps, two employees of Marvelene’s Inn, a surrendered HNLC, and a 66 year-old-man.

All of them have been named by the victim in her statement made before the SCPCR and CWC.

The alleged sex racket came to light earlier this year after an employee of Marvelene’s Inn was arrested. The Inn is being owned by the son of senior Congress leader and Home Minister, H.D.R. Lyngdoh.
