Seng Samla Mawlai Nongpdeng organizes awareness on drug abuse

Shillong, March 29: Seng Samla Mawlai Nongpdeng in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Seng Khasi College today organized an awareness programme on drug abuse to enlighten the people especially the youth about the danger posed by drugs to the society.

The programme was held at Indoor Sports Hall, Wahumkhrah.

Dr Rica Lamar of Manbha Foundation, who was the resource person said that the number of injecting drugs users is high and they were registered at Shillong, Jowai, and Khliehriat.

Dr Lamar said that rise of drugs users and peddlershas become a cause of concern especially the use of children aged between 13 and 14 years to sell the substance abuse and underlined the need to stop both supply and demand of drugs.
She also said that the number of people consuming drugs both men and women is high and stressed the need to tackle this problem.
She urged parents, youth and elders to work together to curb the menace of drugs which is a threat to the people and society at large.

East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner, P.S. Dkhar stressed the need to put in efforts and work together among the Dorbar Shnongs, Seng Samla and the government to eradicate the problem.

East Khasi Hills superintendent of police, Davis N.R. Marak talked about the danger of drugs and the availability of different types of drugs in Shillong

The SP urged people to share information and work together to solve the problem and asked youths not to fall into the trap of drug abuse.
He also asked parents and family members of drugs users and peddlers not to tell the truth so that the menace of drugs could be tackled.
