SHILLONG, JUL 8: The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) greeted the people of Meghalaya on Shad Behdeinkhlam on Wednesday, but also took exception to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma being invited as Chief Guest for the celebrations.

In a statement issued by VPP Spokesperson Dr AW Rani, the party conveyed festival greetings and hoped the occasion would strengthen communal harmony.

“The VPP extends its warm greetings to everyone celebrating Shad Behdeinkhlam. May this sacred festival bring peace, unity, and prosperity to our people,” Rani said.

At the same time, the VPP voiced concern over the participation of the Assam CM at the event.

“The VPP would have been more grateful to the organizers should they have avoided inviting Mr. Himanta Biswa as the Chief Guest for the occasion,” the statement read.

Citing border issues, Rani said Sarma “is instrumental in instilling a sense of insecurity in the minds of the people living in the border areas.”

The party stressed that the festival represents the cultural ethos of the state.

“Shad Behdeinkhlam is a celebration of our culture, identity, and unity. We hope the occasion remains one that unites our people and reflects the sentiments and aspirations of the people of Meghalaya,” Rani added.
