Shillong Bar Association meets Law Minister on appointment of Advocate General

Shillong, Mar 20: A delegation of the Shillong Bar Association on Tuesday met Law Minister, James K. Sangma and urged the state government to appoint a new advocate general from the State.

A memorandum was also submitted to the Minister, saying that an advocate general should not be from outside the state but from the state itself, as he will have better understanding and in a better position to advise the Government on all matters.

The memorandum stated that the previous Government while making the appointment for the post of Advocate General choose to look over the members of the Shillong Bar Association and preferred to appoint an advocate who is neither a domicile of Meghalaya or a regular practitioner in the courts of the state.

“Though appointment of Advocate General is the prerogative of the Government, such appointment from outside the state does hurt the sentiment of the members of the Shillong Bar Association and the legal fraternity based within the state. We have no dearth of competent legal professionals who can competently advise the Government on all matters,” the petition said.
