Shillong Muslim Union cancels prayers for April 9

Shillong, Apr 6: The Shillong Muslim Union (SMU) on Monday informed that the management committees of various Masjid (mosque) and Kabristan (graveyards) have unanimously decided not hold Ibadat (prayers) and Ziyarat (pious visitation) in East Khasi Hills & Ri Bhoi districts on April 9.

“The management committee of various Masjid and the management committee of the graveyards have collectively and unanimously decided not to hold Ibadat in the Masjid and Ziyarat in Kabristan due to the COVID-19 pandemic and instructions given by the District Administration on social distancing and public gatherings,” SMU general secretary Sayeedullah Nongrum said in a statement issued here.

There are 11 Masjid and 4 Kabristan in the two districts.

Expressing gratitude to the state and district administration for handling the situation so well, Nongrum, who is also a former minister, said, “To augment your efforts in containing this situation, I would once again appeal to the members of the community and all stakeholders to refrain from coming out from their homes and observe the holy occasion in their individual homes on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat on April 9, considering that this day is a very significant and auspicious for the Muslim community.”

Meanwhile, SMU also appeals to all the citizens of Meghalaya in particular and the country in general to join in prayers in their individual homes and pray for the human race to fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as Shab-e-Barat is a very auspicious day.
