Shillong, Apr 26: East Khasi Hills Police imposed fines totalling ₹2.46 lakh after detecting 194 traffic violations during a special naka drive conducted across Shillong on the intervening night of April 25 and 26.
The coordinated enforcement operation was carried out across three sectors—Sadar, Laitumkhrah, and Lumdiengjri—under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police, along with the SP (City/Traffic) and Additional SP Traffic.

According to police officials, the drive aimed to intensify action against traffic violations and unsafe road practices, particularly during night hours when such offences are more frequent. The operation involved simultaneous multi-location checking to ensure wider coverage and stricter enforcement.
Authorities focused on key violations including drunk driving, illegal modification of exhaust systems and lights, use of black-tinted vehicle glasses, and lack of proper documentation under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
“During the drive, a total of 194 violations were detected and fines amounting to ₹2,46,000 were imposed,” police said in a statement.
More than 100 personnel were deployed for the operation, with active participation from all In-Charges of Traffic Branches and Officers-in-Charge of various police stations. Each naka point was supervised by gazetted officers to ensure effective coordination and enforcement.
Police officials stated that the special drive reflects their continued commitment to sustained and visible enforcement, aimed at deterring violations, enhancing compliance, and improving overall road safety in the district.
