SHILLONG, AUG 17: The Shillong Municipal Board on Monday relocated 86 hawkers from Laitumkhrah to a designated vending areas at Dhankheti and Brightwell Bungalow at Barik to clear footpaths and roads for pedestrian use.

SMB CEO PK Boro said the move followed a one-month notice period.

“Everything has been arranged. They are complying and cooperating with us,” Boro told reporters during the drive.

He added that the relocation was planned in advance.

“This is not about one day. We issued notices giving them one month’s time and today is the day for relocation. They have all accepted and relocated.”

Boro said the government is also providing financial assistance to affected hawkers and street vendors.

On the issue of hawkers along Jail Road, he said, “That is a different issue. We will take action accordingly.”
