Shillong, July 24: The Meghalaya government has assured students of Sohra Government College that two more teachers would be appointed soon, while Rs 1.40 crore has been earmarked for the construction of additional classrooms in the college.
The assurance was given by Higher and Technical Education Minister, Roshan Warjri to a delegation of Sohra Government College Students Union who met her at the Main Secretariat on Monday.
The delegation was led by Sohra MDC, Donewan Wanlang.
President of the Students Union, Ethylbert Khongrymmbai, said that the Minister has assured that two more teachers for Education subject would be appointed by transferring them from Williamnagar.
The college did not have sufficient teachers for Education subject, after one teacher resigned in 2015 and another retired from service in 2016.
The Minister also assured to appoint one more lecturer in the college, and asked the principal of the college to submit a proposal in this regard.
Moreover, Khongrymmai said that the Minister said that the state government has also earmarked Rs 1.40 crore for the construction of additional building which will have four classrooms to accommodate the students.
The students Union thanked the MDC for his initiative to meet the Minister and air the grievances before the government.
Meanwhile the Sohra MDC said that at present, the college is congested and has more than 900 students, where five to six students have to sit together in one bench, and more than 200 students are sitting in one classroom.
He said that he had also given Rs 6 lakh to the college for the construction of additional classrooms from the special assistance given by the Central government through the KHADC.
