SHILLONG, JUL 29: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday said work on the subway being constructed on the washed-away stretch of the Shillong-Dawki road is in its final stage and the road is likely to be made operational within a week.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said instructions have been issued to NHIDCL and the executing agency to expedite the work.

“Instructions have been given. I am always in touch with the district administration, the DC, SDO Civil and with PWD. They are on the job,” Tynsong said.

“The real issue here is about that portion where the road was washed away. So now, instructions have been given to NHIDCL and the company selected by them for execution of work to create a sub-way there itself,” he said.

“I am happy to inform you that the creation of the sub-way is now almost at the final stage. The work is going on day and night. This company is working and I am very sure, hopefully within one week’s time we will be able to make the Shillong-Dawki road operational again,” he added.

Clarifying that the project is under the Centre, Tynsong said the state government is coordinating with NHIDCL to resolve issues on the ground.

“The Shillong-Dawki Road is not directly under the control of the state government. This is being done by the Government of India through NHIDCL. The Ministry of Road Transport has entrusted NHIDCL to do all the needful,” he said.

“But from our side, from the state government and state PWD, we are working together with NHIDCL. For any issues, any sensitive issues or challenges that they have, the district administration steps in. That is the duty of the state government,” Tynsong said.

“We have impressed upon them and we have told them to please make sure that the progress of work is satisfactory,” he added.
