SHILLONG, AUG 11: The United Democratic Party is all set for the Shillong Lok Sabha byelection and will contest with or without the support of alliance partner HSPDP, party president and Cabinet Minister Metbah Lyngdoh said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said the UDP has already finalised its candidate and started constituency-level campaigning, even as the Election Commission is yet to announce polling dates.

“We are ready to contest the election. We have also finalised the candidature and we are moving ahead,” he said.

On HSPDP’s reported decision to not back the UDP candidate, Lyngdoh said the party would proceed regardless.

“I have nothing to say on HSPDP. That is their internal matter. But with or without them, we are moving ahead as a party,” he said.

He also confirmed the UDP is contesting independently.

“As of now, we are moving alone, not under the banner of RDA. It is as UDP alone,” he said.

Outlining the party’s pitch, Lyngdoh said legal expertise and protection of regional interests will be key.

“First and foremost, we are fortunate to have a candidate who is well-versed in law, which is the need of the hour. With many amendments expected in Parliament, that expertise is one of our biggest strengths,” he said.

“As a regional party, we keep the interest of our own people first, without discriminating against any other section of society,” he added.
