UDP to attend campaign by Presidential candidates

Shillong, Jully 04: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to attend a campaign by two candidates for the upcoming Presidential election, slated for July 17.

Congress-backed presidential candidate, Meira Kumar will hold her campaign in the Congress–ruled state tomorrow. The former Lok Sabha Speaker will meet MLAs from the state at the Annexe Hall of the temporary Assembly building at Rilbong at 11 am.

Candidate of the BJP-led NDA, Ram Nath Govind, will also arrive in the state capital later this week to seek support of MLAs and MPs from the state.

“We have received invitations from both camps (NDA and Congress) and we will attend their respective campaigns,” UDP general secretary and MLA Jemino Mawthoh said on Tuesday.

According to Mawthoh, the UDP would listen first to both the candidates, and then decide to which candidate the party should extend support.

“So far, we have not even discussed the matter at the party level. After attending their campaigns, we will soon meet as a party to decide on the matter,” he said.
