Shillong, Feb 28: Work for constructing a new Assembly building will begin soon, and the High Powered Committee (HPC) of the State Assembly have decided to hand over the construction to the Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Limited.

Informing this after the meeting of the HPC held here on Thursday, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma told reporters that the HPC has finalized to hand over the project to the firm, which is a PSU of the Uttar Pradesh government.

“We are happy that a long pending issue, which has been taking a lot of time, has finally been finalized and hopefully the work should start very soon,” he said.

The meeting was chaired by the Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy and attended by the Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma, cabinet ministers, MLAs and others.

Conrad also informed that the government was confident that it would be able to complete the work within a stipulated time of 36 months.

“Apart from mobilizing funds from our own resources, the state government will also approach the Centre for extending financial support. At the same time, we have already started initiating talks with financial institutions and agencies,” the chief minister said.

The new Assembly building will be constructed at an 80 acres land at Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong Township.

The Leader of Opposition emphasized the need to have an independent quality monitoring committee to oversee the smooth implementation of the project, and the HPC will also make a frequent visit not only to ensure that the project is completed within time, but to ensure quality being set in the DPR

The State Legislative Assembly in the past 18 years did not have a permanent building after an old Assembly building at Khyndai Lad was destroyed by fire on January 9, 2001.
