Shillong, Mar 3: Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, the president of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) and Nongkrem legislator, has made some serious allegations regarding the recent elections in Meghalaya.

He claimed that free and fair elections were only held in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), but not in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) election.

Basaiawmoit alleges that in Jaintia Hills, village leaders dictate who voters should support, which imposes their will on them.

He also claimed that the VPP had identified sensitive polling stations, but the district administration took no action.

Furthermore, Basaiawmoit alleges booth rigging in many polling stations and even named specific stations where candidates backed by village leaders received many votes.

The VPP president also made some disturbing allegations, including the abduction of one of their polling agents and another individual being taken by opponents and nearly thrown off a bridge.

Basaiawmoit, while demanding action, said that the VPP won’t sit idle until the people of Jaintia Hills can exercise their franchise freely.

He even questioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s ability to sleep peacefully, knowing his people can’t vote freely.
