SHILLONG, APR 17: The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Friday expressed its strong concern over the alleged decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to develop Mawjymbuin Cave under central schemes such as PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan 2.0, with indications that the site may be promoted along religious lines.
“The VPP would like to categorically state that Mawjymbuin Cave in Mawsynram is purely a natural tourist destination and must remain so. Any attempt to project, interpret, or develop the cave as a religious or even cultural site is deeply concerning and unacceptable,” VPP spokesperson Dr AW Rani said in a statement.
Rani recalled that the issue of associating Mawjymbuin Cave with a particular religion has already led to significant public debate and legal intervention in the past. The developments arising from such cases make it clear that the site should not be converted into or treated as a pilgrimage destination under any circumstances.
“At this juncture, the VPP urges all concerned authorities and stakeholders to exercise restraint and responsibility. We must respect the feelings of the people and avoid unnecessary controversies that may lead to division and unrest,” he said while reiterating that Mawjymbuin Cave should not be linked to any religion or faith in any manner whatsoever.
“It is, and must remain, a tourist destination,” Rani added further.
