Shillong, July 26: The Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL) has issued a flood alert in the downstream of Umïam river after the water level of the Umiam reservoir has risen following incessant rain in the last few days.
A warning issued by the Chief Engineer (C), Maintenance & Small Hydro, MePGCL here said that due to incessant rain in the last few days, the water level of the Umiam reservoir has risen upto 3205.62 ft at 10.30 am on July 26.
“It is apprehended that in case very heavy rainfall continues in the catchment area of the Umiam dam, the reservoir may become full which would necessitate opening of gates of the Umiam dam to allow the flood to pass through,” the warning said.
“All persons residing or working in the downstream of the Umiam reservoir are cautioned against engaging in any activity near the banks of the river Umiam since the level of the water in the river may suddenly rise due to the opening of gates in the dam. All efforts will be made to regulate the discharge of water through the dam to the minimum,” the warning added.
