Shillong, July 12: An elderly woman died and her two daughters including grandsons were injured when an auto-rickshaw fell into a deep gorge, after it was hit by logs on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident took place at around 2.30 pm at Mawlyndep village under Umiam police station in Ri Bhoi District.
They said the trees which were felled by some people on a hill top near the road were made to roll down and eventually hit the auto-rickshaw leading to the fatal accident. All victims are from the same family.
The deceased was identified as Arbina Ryntathiang of Pyndengnongbri village under Mairang Civil Sub-Division in West Khasi Hills District.
Those injured in the accident include Ibaphylla Ryntathiang, Batimila Ryntathiang, Shanborlang Ryntathiang, Mewanbanshan Ryntathiang (5), Ericson Ryntathiang (1 year, 9 months) and Samebanteiskhem Ryntathiang (3).
Ibaphylla and Batimila are daughters of Arbina. Mewanbanshan and Ericson were the sons of Ibaphylla and Samebanteiskhem is the son of Batimila.
Sources informed that Arbina had gone to Mawlyndep village to fetch one of her daughters who was staying with her husband. However, while they were on their way back they met with the accident.
Arbina, who suffered from internal bleeding, succumbed to her injuries at Holycross Health Centre at Umsaw Lum in the district. All the injured persons were later shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital for further medical treatment.
Till filing of the report, no one has been arrested who involved in the rolling down of the tree logs from the hill top down to the road.
