Jowai celebrates world literacy day
Shillong, Sept. 8: The office of the District Mission Coordinator SSA – SEMAM, West Jaintia Hills District observed today the World Literacy Day on the theme, ‘Education is Important’ at Dorbar Chnong Chiliang Raj Hall, Jowai. Shri R. Rapthap, Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Shri R. Muthu, Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills District as the Guest of Honour, D. Khongiong, Joint Director School of Education & Literacy, West Jaintia Hills District, M. Pde, District School Education Officer, West Jaintia Hills, Dr.(Mrs) L.M Darnei District Mission Coordinator, SSA SEMAN, West Jaintia Hills were among the others who attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Rapthap expressed his disappointment to see that the District has the lowest literacy rate and therefore urged all concerned to understand the need of education. Stating that literacy is all around us, Shri Rapthap said we need to put our best to be able to face all challenges, especially in this competitive world
‘Education is the tool that gives us confident, helps us to explore and understand better’ said Shri Muthu, adding that “we all have grown in our intellect because of education and in this competitive world mere talking is not enough to show one’s qualification and we need certificates to prove our capability and need to go through regular schooling”.
Dr. L.M Darnei, District Mission Coordinator, SSA-SEMAM, West Jaintia Hills District in her welcome address informed that Jaintia Hills Districts has the lowest literacy rate which stands at 63.26% against 74.43 % of the State, therefore said that there is a need to eradicate illiteracy in State especially in the District and this day is celebrated to draw attention for the need of education.
Other highlights of the day are extempore speech and skit competition. Students attending the programme carried placards with slogans on the importance and need of education and the best Slogan was awarded to Kurimai Memorial Upper Primary SSA, the second prize to Loompyrdi Iongpiah Upper Primary SSA and third prize goes to Pohmusiang Upper Primary SSA. World Literacy Day observed at Tura
Shillong, September 8, 2017: Along with the rest of the world the World Literacy Day 2017 was observed today at SMELC Conference Hall, Dakopgre, Tura with the theme Importance of Education. Chief Executive Member, Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) Mr. Boston Marak graced the occasion as Chief Guest.
Additional Deputy Commissioner & District Mission Coordinator, West Garo Hills Sabrella B Marak, District School and Education Officer (DSEO) S K Saha, President, Senior citizen, W G Momin, other dignitaries, officials of education department, partner NGOs, teachers and students also attended the function.
While highlighting the transition of the system of education from past to the present which provides better learning opportunities as time changes Boston Marak recalls his own experiences of life spent in a village school and thereby becoming successful in his political career. He further reiterated that sharing his experiences should help to encourage others especially students to perform better in their future career.
Further, he advised the students to focus on education in their prime time and also asked the concerned parents to encourage their children to understand the importance of education in their life and contribute to the growth and development of the society in their capacity. He also suggests the concerned department to organize this kind of programmes in the rural areas so as to sensitize the parents the importance of education required for their children.
While delivering her keynote address, S B Marak said that the key aspect of observance of World Literacy Day is to mobilize public opinion in favour of struggle against illiteracy and a forum to disseminate information on literacy and raise public awareness about the significance of literacy for individual and national development. “Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy”, she added.
Initiatives under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), West Garo Hills was presented by Smti U G Sangma, Block Mission Coordinator, Gambegre highlighting various special training programmes and other activities undertaken by SSA in the district.
The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), West Garo Hills district has also conducted a Model enrolment drive for Out of School Children in all the blocks of the district for which the Educational package for few selected students were distributed by the Chief Guest on the occasion. Presentation of song, dance and skit by Kasturba Gandhi Ballika Vidyalaya schools of the district and Out of School children were some of the highlights of the days celebration. (I&PR)
