Shillong, Oct 28: Former Rangsakona MLA Zenith Sangma, brother of Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma, has resigned from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and is set to rejoin the Indian National Congress (INC).
In his resignation letter submitted to AITC state president Charles Pyngrope on Monday, Zenith stated that he had decided to “move on and begin a new chapter” aligned with his personal vision and aspirations for the people he represents.
Pyngrope has accepted his resignation, which includes stepping down from the post of AITC Vice President and relinquishing his primary membership in the party.
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has already approved Zenith’s return to the Congress fold. A letter from AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal has informed Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Vincent H. Pala of the decision.
Political observers see this development as a strategic boost for the Congress, particularly in the Garo Hills region, as it seeks to rebuild its base ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Zenith had joined the AITC in 2021 alongside his brother Dr. Mukul Sangma and several other MLAs who defected from the Congress. However, the AITC managed to secure only five seats in the 2023 Assembly elections.
