Shillong, July 31: Chief Minister, Conrad Kongkal Sangma who is also the candidate of the National People’s Party (NPP) submitted his nomination papers for the bye election to South Tura constituency.
Conrad, who is the National President of the NPP and Lok Sabha MP from Tura Parliamentary Constituency, is seeking election as member of the tenth Meghalaya Assembly from South Tura constituency in order to continue as Chief Minister of the state.
Conrad filed his nomination papers before Returning Officer for the bye election to South Tura constituency, Sabrella Marak.
Supporters and NPP leaders accompanied the Chief Minister during the filing of nominations. After filing of nominations, Conrad addressed party leaders and functionaries at the NPP Tura office.
South Tura constituency will go to bypolls along with Ranikor Assembly constituency on August 23. Counting of votes will be held on August 27.
South Tura constituency remains vacant after MLA, Agatha Kongkal Sangma resigned as member of the State Assembly to pave way for Conrad to contest the bye election.
Congress MLA, Martin M. Danggo also resigned as member of the Assembly from Ranikor constituency and he will contest the bye election on NPP ticket.
Danggo resigned as MLA after Ranikor was upgraded as Civil Sub Division by the NPP-led MDA government.
The UDP, a partner of the NPP in the MDA government is fielding Pius Marweiñ as candidate from Ranikor.
The opposition Congress is yet to announce its candidates for the bye elections to both South Tura and Ranikor Assembly seats.
So far, no nominations were filed by any candidate for the bye election to Ranikor constituency.
