Shillong, Aug 6: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is open for discussion on the idea of conducting the National Register of Citizens and assured of having a discussion on this issue.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that NRC is a new concept altogether but “we have received demand from KSU and other groups including political parties. It seems that they wanted that we should go the same way where NRC was adopted in Assam.”

He said that the issue was referred in consultation with the Chief Minister to the political department to study the matter and they may come up in the form of a cabinet memo so that the issue can be discussed and take a decision.

To a question if the State government is in favour of the NRC update in the state, Tynsong said, “It is not necessary to say in favour or not favour, but this issue is to be discussed. We are open to the idea of the people in the state, whatever recommendation or suggestion being made by them.”

The NRC in Assam was published on July 30 where over 40 lakhs persons did not figure their names in the list as citizens.
