Shillong, Aug 9: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday asked the state government to do away with the culture of appointing retired government employees in the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (MTDC).

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Tourism minister Metbah Lyngdoh here , chairman of the HYC Employment Cell, Rhembor G Saibon said, “We have urged the intervention of the minister to put an end to this practice of appointing retired employees in the MTDC.”

He said that the minister has assured the delegation to take necessary action if needed to cancel all such appointments.

In the memorandum submitted to Lyngdoh, the HYC pointed out the MTDC had allegedly appointed as many as five retired government employees on contractual basis.

These include PB Dutta, a retired employee of the Accountant General office, who was appointed as GM (Pers) in the MTDC on November 2017, Bishnu Mazumdar, retired from AG office in 2006-07 and appointed as GM (F), RC Das, who retired as chef from Pinewood Hotel was appointed as chef on contract basis, Vivek Roy, retired as manager accounts on February this year, was appointed as consultant and Lucas Sunar was appointed at Orchid Lake Resort Water Sport Complex, it stated.

The HYC also demanded the government to direct the concerned recruitment branch to conduct a free and fair recruitment process for the posts especially when the state is being faced with growing unemployment problem.

“We suggest that instead of appointing retired government servant, the MTDC should advertise these posts so as to enable the eligible unemployed youth to apply and secure job and which will also help in addressing the unemployment problem,” Saibon said.
