Shillong, Aug 10: National People’s Party (NPP) national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday campaigned for Martin Danggo and addressed an election rally at Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills.
Ranikor will go to bye elections along with South Tura on August 23.
Over 3000 people attended the rally addressed by the Chief Minister, C&RD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, State NPP President W. R. Kharlukhi, State General Secretary Babeth Sangma, among others.
Different communities presented colourful cultural items at the rally.
In his address, Conrad, “My late father P. A. Sangma had concerns for the people of Ranikor constituency. He had said that if we are given an opportunity, we should do something for the people. I feel privilege that the people of Meghalaya have given us the mandate and we were able to do something for the welfare of Ranikor.â€
Danggo sat along with the crowd and listened to the Chief Minister’s speech.
Talking highly about Danggo, who quit the Congress to re-contest bye election as NPP candidate, Conrad said, “Danggo has sacrificed his post for the people of Ranikor constituency. He did not resign for his own interest, but because of his concern for the people and wanted to fulfill their aspirations.â€
He urged the public to give a befitting response to Martin Danggo by ensuring that he gets the biggest mandate of the people.
He took a dig at former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma at the rally and accused him of misusing Central funds, which had derailed development in the State.
“We have been able to reverse the trend and ensure that we serve the people. NPP is in the ruling side, and I am confident that the people of Ranikor will vote for the ruling party and re-elect Danggo to represent the people,†he said.
The Chief Minister urged the voters of Ranikor not to be misled anybody, and vote without fear.
