Shillong Feb 25: Campaign for the elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council in Meghalaya ended on Monday.
The campaigned ended peacefully and there was no report of violation of the model code of conduct by political parties or candidates.
A total of 131 candidates are contesting from 29 constituencies of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), and 101 candidates from 29 constituencies of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
Two sitting MLAs are also in the fray, Gigur Myrthong of the ruling NPP from Mawshynrut constituency, and Lambor Malngiang, an Independent MLA from Nongkrem, who is also the chairman of the state planning board.
On the final day of the campaign, several candidates held massive rally to woo voters. In Mawlai constituency, Independent candidate, Teiborlang Pathaw, organized a rally where thousands of both two-wheelers and cars including buses joined the rally.
Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) candidate, Martle N. Mukhim also organized his final campaign where thousands of supporters from Jatah area attended the meeting at Jatah. Mukhim who is contesting from Mawkynrew constituency, is the former MLA and former minister, and oldest among the candidates.
Eight women candidates including four sitting members of the KHADC are in the fray.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has a total of 7,35,143 voters and the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council has a total of 2,49,334 voters.
There are 1,433 polling stations spread across the 29 constituencies of KHADC while the 29 constituencies of the JHADC have 408 polling booths.
