Shillong,Oct 25:
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has felt that the Centre should step in if there are illegal activities in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) even as he made it clear that there is not much interference from the state government.

“As a concern citizen and as the head of the state if there is any kind of illegal activities that is going on it must be enquired into and I urge the Government of India to look into the matter,” Sangma told reporters here on Friday.

This also came following the recent expose by the NEIGRIHMS director Dr DM Thapa about the alleged business syndicate between the Head of Cardiology department Dr Animesh Mishra and the Sanjo pharmacy.

The serious allegation has drawn the attention of civil societies and political parties.

The Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) has also filed an FIR with the SP of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Shillong demanding for a CBI probe into the illegal business in the institute.

Similar demand was also made by the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC).

Asked whether the state government can order for a CBI inquiry, the chief minister however said there is not much interference from the state government in the administration and running of NEIGRIHMS as the institute is directly under the jurisdiction of the Central government.

“I think agency from the central government side will be the right agency to look into it and I think the Government of India will also take an appropriate action in that line,” he added.

Earlier, the NEIGRIHMS director had also sought the intervention of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a CBI inquiry into the alleged nexus between the cardiology department and the private pharmacy.

The director informed that stents and pacemaker consignment from a private vendor to Cath lab, Cardiology Department headed by Dr Animesh Mishra was seized on April 30.

He said that the Vigilance enquiry report was also sent to the CVO of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Central Vigilance Commission on September 3, but no action was taken against the culprit Dr Mishra.

“No action was taken against the culprit Dr Mishra but rather the director in 13th Governing Council meeting…was asked to resign without reasons explained to him,” Dr Thapa said in his letter to the prime minister.

The director has also requested the prime minister to direct for instituting an independent inquiry into the alleged arbitrary decision of the Governing Council to remove him.
