Nongpoh, July 16: Downgate Football Club from Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District, brought pride to Meghalaya after winning the Under-15 Summer Football Tournament held in Dimapur, Nagaland. Besides lifting the championship trophy, two players from the team also received individual awards for their outstanding performances.
Khampher Makri was adjudged the Best Defender, while Wanshan Thabah won the Best Goalkeeper award.
The Ri Bhoi-based team, coached by David Marwein with Riba Kular Manih serving as the team manager, secured the title after defeating hosts Haiti Football Club of Nagaland 2-1 in a closely contested final.
The championship match witnessed an intense contest, with both teams displaying impressive football skills despite their young age. Downgate FC’s victory is being seen as a significant achievement for Meghalaya, particularly Ri Bhoi District, highlighting the growing talent among the state’s young footballers and the dedication of coaches and officials working to promote grassroots football.
The Summer Football Tournament, organised by the Dimapur Sports Association, was held at the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Ground in Dimapur from July 14 to 16, 2026, featuring Under-15 teams from different regions.
Downgate FC’s triumph and the individual accolades earned by its players underscore the promising future of youth football in Meghalaya.
