Shillong, Oct 25: The Meghalaya government will soon submit its replies to the Ministry of Home Affairs on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Chief minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters that the cabinet has discussed the 15-point questionnaires put up by the MHA.

“Replies to the questionnaires have been prepared…and we will be sending them to the MHA,” he said.

The questionnaires are basically observations of the state government when it comes to the aspects of anti-defection law, different district planning committee, reservation and renaming of the district councils to territorial councils.

He said the MHA has also sought the views of the state government on the functioning and funding to the district councils and funds spent by them.

The chief minister also informed that the issue related to the move to nominate members of the district council from among the unrepresented tribes was also discussed during the cabinet meeting.

Earlier, the state government-constituted committee headed by the district council affairs minister James K Sangma had decided to recommend deletion of the word ‘unrepresented tribes’ from the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

On this, the chief minister said that he had briefed the union home minister Amit Shah during a meeting in New Delhi last week, on the concern of the state and its people on the new amended Bill of the Sixth Schedule.
