Shillong, Nov 13 : Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy on Wednesday said that he is yet to receive the ordinance of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2019, which was sent by government to him for his assent on Tuesday.
Interestingly, the State’s secretariat is stone’s throw away from the Raj Bhavan.
“The Governor Secretariat office till 11 am today is yet to receive any papers from the Government,†Roy told reporters after administering the oath of office and secrecy Justice Mohammad Rafiq as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.
Roy said he cannot comment further on the matter as he is yet to receive any papers.
“Until I have seen the ordinance and draft of ordinance I can say nothing,†the Governor said.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said that the government has sent the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019 to Governor, Tathagata Roy for his assent.
The state cabinet had on November 1, approved the amendment to the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016 seeking mandatory registration of outsiders before entering Meghalaya.
“We have sent the ordinance to the Governor for his approval,†deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters.
The ordinance is yet to be implemented in the state as the government is still waiting for the governor’s approval.
Tynsong informed that the state government will also have to redraft the rules for implementing the ordinance.
He said the ordinance will be regularized in the next session of the state Assembly.
