Shillong, September 15: Ri-Bhoi continued to lead the medals table after a strong second day of competition at the Meghalaya State Senior Athletics Championship 2026 on Tuesday.

Ri-Bhoi have won 8 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals, while East Khasi Hills moved into second place with 4 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze. Eastern West Khasi Hills are third with 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze.

The three-day championship is being organised by the Meghalaya Athletics Association (MAA), with the support of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, at the Sports Authority of India centre on the NEHU Shillong campus.

East Khasi Hills secured gold in both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays, while Daniel L Wahlang won the men’s 5000m. Balasiewdor Pathaw claimed the women’s 5000m gold after finishing around one-and-a-half minutes ahead of her nearest rival.

Ri-Bhoi added two gold medals on the second day, with Anrisha Klein winning the women’s long jump and Banistar Syiem taking the men’s shot put.

West Jaintia Hills dominated the 4x100m relays, winning both the men’s and women’s events, with East Khasi Hills finishing runners-up in both.

Athletes from the Garo Hills also enjoyed a successful day. Tushal M Sangma won the men’s javelin gold for North Garo Hills, while Dilme Ch Marak won the women’s discus and Nokme Ch Sangma took gold in the women’s javelin, both representing South Garo Hills.

Eliam Bonkam G Sangma secured South West Garo Hills’ first medal of the championship by winning the men’s long jump.

Tengsilchi B Marak won the women’s 400m, while Lastly Surong of East Jaintia Hills claimed gold in the men’s 400m.

All districts have now secured at least one medal after the first two days of competition. With several events remaining on the final day, athletes will have further opportunities to add to their medal tallies and strengthen their prospects for selection ahead of the 39th National Games.
