Shillong, Jan 14: Extending full support to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), the Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) has announced its decision to set up influx check gates as a mark of protest against the delay of the state government in putting up the entry-exit points in the state.

“Corroborating our solidarity with the stand taken by the KSU on the issue of setting up its own influx check gates, ADE would like to tender its full support to this endeavor and also pronounces to take same measures if the authorities do not comply with our demand,” ADE president Dalseng Bira Ch Momin said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

Momin said the ADE along with other NGOs of the region would be compelled to set up influx check gates in various routes around Garo Hills if the government fails to fulfill their promise and to protect the citizens.

Stating that the debate surrounding non-tribal migrants has always been a volatile one, he said the spectre of the Bangladeshi migrant continues to haunt Meghalaya and ADE always prefers the implementation of an Inner Line Permit like structure already in existence in states like Arunachal Pradesh.

Momin however said after prolonged and arduous agitation taken by the NGOs, instead of ILP, the previous government of the state promised to come up with a comprehensive mechanism to check influx but nothing concrete has been done yet on the ground.

“Even the entry exit points, creation of facilitation centers, deployment of checking authorities have not been provided. Considering the mentioned facts, it has become intense call of the time for a deep introspection into the matter and takes immediate measures to avert the influx crisis,” Momin said.
