Shillong, August 24: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has strongly defended Meghalaya Advocate General Amit Kumar amid demands from lawyers’ associations for his removal, describing him as a dedicated legal professional who has rendered invaluable service to the State.

Sangma said he was aware of the issue in broad terms but declined to comment on the specific demands, arguments or discussions surrounding the controversy.

“All I want to say is that Meghalaya is very fortunate to have a person like Amit Kumar as its Advocate General,” the Chief Minister said.

He said serving and retired government officials, as well as Cabinet ministers, could testify to Kumar’s contribution to the State. According to Sangma, the Advocate General has guided the government through several crucial legal matters and helped departments and officials navigate complex legal challenges.

“He has worked with great passion and dedication for the State and its people. Many matters could have become extremely complicated without his guidance,” Sangma said.

The Chief Minister further noted that Kumar could have chosen to practise independently before the Supreme Court or elsewhere in the country, but instead decided to devote a significant part of his professional career to serving Meghalaya.

“We are happy and thankful that Amit Kumar has chosen to remain with us and serve the people and the Government of Meghalaya,” he said.
