Shillong, August 24: National People’s Party (NPP) national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has expressed sadness over former Rajya Sabha MP Dr W.R. Kharlukhi’s resignation from the party, while saying that he respects and accepts the veteran leader’s decision.

Sangma said Kharlukhi had taken the decision independently and may have his own concerns and plans for the future.

Recalling their long political association, the Chief Minister said Kharlukhi had worked closely with his late father and former Meghalaya Chief Minister P.A. Sangma and had made significant contributions to the state, the NPP and public life.

Sangma also recalled that Kharlukhi had earlier declined an offer from P.A. Sangma to become a Rajya Sabha member. However, Conrad said he later ensured Kharlukhi’s election to the Upper House, as he believed that an experienced political leader deserved an opportunity to represent Meghalaya in Parliament.

Asked whether Kharlukhi’s resignation would be a setback for the NPP, Sangma said the movement of people between political parties was part of politics.

“On a personal note, I am saddened because I did not expect this to happen. However, I respect and accept his decision,” he said.

The Chief Minister maintained that the NPP would continue to move forward with its organisational work despite the resignation.

He added that party leaders would discuss whether to approach Kharlukhi and request him to reconsider his decision.
