Shillong, Feb 21: Pro-ILP groups under the banner of Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) have decided to intensify agitations to demand from the Centre to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the state.

During a meeting of CoMSO held in Shillong on Friday, it was decided that consultative meetings with all stakeholders including heads traditional institutions for mobilizing a massive movement against the Centre’s dilly-dally attitude.

“We will consult scholars, academicians, authors, former politicians, retired government officials, traditional heads, women and youth organizations and take their suggestions on how to go about bringing such a movement which will specifically focus on achieving ILP demand,” CoMSO chairman, Robertjune Kharjahrin said.

“The movement will be of the people, by the people and for the people. We want the upcoming movement to be a bigger agitation than other agitations in the past to mount pressure on the Centre to implement ILP in Meghalaya,” he said.

The second phase of direct action agitation to implement ILP will begin from next week.

“Under this second phase of direct action, we will conduct joint checkings with the District Task Forces and enforcement wings of the district councils against illegal foreigners working as labourers in the Khasi Jaintia and Garo Hills of the state,” he said.

Surprise checkings will be also conducted at factories, industries and construction sites.

Earlier, the CoMSO had deployed its volunteers to assist the Directorate of Anti-Infiltration in checking illegal immigrants who enter the state without valid

The CoMSO also slammed the MDA delegation led by chief minister Conrad K Sangma who met Union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Thursday night.

“We failed to understand the statement of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma who stated that the delegation was happy about the outcome of the meeting (with Shah) when nothing positive came out of it,” Kharjahrin said.

During the meeting, Shah had assured the state delegation to examine the resolution on ILP passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on December 19, 2019.

“The CoMSO is very disappointed with the Centre decision on this long pending demand of the people of the state. We were expecting for a positive response from the Union home minister, but he only assured to examine the resolution. It seems that the Centre is not keen to consider the ILP demand,” Kharjahrin said.

Kharjahrin said that there is no need to examine the resolution but the Centre should have considered the same without any further delay.
