Shillong Feb 26: The Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri Hynñiewtrep (SNSBH) on Wednesday met chief minister Conrad K Sangma and discussed issues related to the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), and the need to follow up with the Centre the proposed Sixth Schedule amendment and finding permanent solution to the long pending inter-state boundary dispute.

SNSBH secretary, R L Blah said that a delegation of SNSBH met the chief minister and expressed serious concern over the boundary dispute which has caused frequent tensions in areas along the inter-state border.

“We shared our displeasure especially to see through the media that Assam is showing a map of 1964 in connection with the areas falling within Assam. This is unacceptable because Meghalaya was created in 1972,” Blah said.

Stating that the state government should solve the issue which has been pending since 1972, Blah urged the chief minister to seriously take up this issue for finding long standing solution instead of always maintaining status quo.

Blah also informed that the matter related to the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule was discussed with the chief minister and urged him to follow it up because the Central government will table an amendment bill in the upcoming second leg of the Parliament’s budget session.

“We stressed that there is a need to amend the Sixth Schedule so that the word President as mentioned in Para 12 A (b) of the Sixth Schedule, be replaced with the word Governor so that Central laws not relevant for implementation in the state, can be notified by the Governor,” Blah said.

He also stressed that bills passed by Autonomous District Councils should go only to Governor for approval and not to President too.
