Shillong, July 17: The 182nd death anniversary of freedom fighter, U Tirot Sing Syiem was commemorated on Monday in the city including his birth place at Nongkhlaw.

The day was also commemorated at Nongkhlaw the birth place of U Tirot Sing, as well as Mairang, in West Khasi Hills district.

Wreaths were laid at the memorial statue of U Tirot Sing at Nongkhlaw and Mairang as a mark of respect.

During a function at Nongkhlaw, the Syiemlieh Clan of Nongkhlaw, Dorbar Shnong and Hima Nongkhlaw while paying tribute to U Tirot Sing, urged the state government to declare Hima Nongkhlaw as “Khasi Patriotic Homage” as well as establish a museum in memory of U Tirot Sing so various materials used by him could be displayed to the world.

They also demanded from the state government to convert Nongkhlaw as one of the tourist destinations so that people from across the globe will know about the place and the Khasi freedom fighter.

Moreover, they also asked the government to blacktop a road from the main PWD road to U Tirot Sing cave which is about 600-metre long.

In Shillong, various groups, Khasi Students’ Union and Hynñiewtrep Youth Council commemorated the death anniversary. While the KSU activists paid floral tribute at the memorial statue of U Tirot Sing at Madan ïewrynghep, Laitumkhrah, the HYC organized a march from Dinam Hall, Jaïaw to State Central Library’s premises and paid floral tribute at the monument built in honour of U Tirot Sing.
The HYC also staged a sit-in demonstration to demand from the State government to its 14-point demand including implementation of Inner Line Permit to check influx in the state.

Representatives of various political parties also paid their tributes to the freedom fighter on the occasion.
