Shillong, August 18: From the footballing streets of Seville to the vibrant pitches of India, Spanish attacking midfielder José Núñez Martín, better known as Chema, is set on leaving his mark with NorthEast United FC in the 134th Durand Cup.
A product of the Sevilla FC youth academy, Chema’s career has taken him across Spain, with stints at Real Betis ‘B’, Albacete, and most recently Antequera CF in the Primera Federación, Spain’s third tier. Known for his vision and creativity, he was a pivotal presence in the 2024–25 season, clocking over 3,000 minutes of football, scoring once, and registering 10 assists.
Now, he has brought his experience to Indian football. “Playing in Spain has shaped me into the footballer I am today, and I feel I’m at a great stage in my career,” Chema said. “The opportunity to come to India came during conversations with the coach, and I decided to take it.”
Chema admits adapting to a new footballing culture is a challenge, but one he has embraced. “I am gradually adapting to Indian football and to the coach’s ideas, and I’m really enjoying it. There’s a great atmosphere in the dressing room, and that makes everything easier,” he shared.
For the Spaniard, the goal is clear: impact. “My aim is to adapt as quickly as possible and contribute so that we can have a successful and unforgettable season,” he added.
Chema credited head coach Juan Pedro Benali for easing his transition. “Juan Pedro has shown great confidence in me. I’m working hard to grasp his ideas quickly and repay the trust with strong performances.”
With the Durand Cup underway, Chema is eager to spearhead NorthEast United FC’s pursuit of silverware and begin his Indian football journey on a high. From the youth fields of Sevilla to the passionate stands of India, his next chapter promises to be one of flair, creativity, and ambition.
