Shillong, Sept 2: Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Tuesday formally launched the state’s annual tourism calendar, announcing that the popular Cherry Blossom Festival will once again open the season.
Addressing the launch event, Lyngdoh said Shillong has already been voted the “most favorite tourism destination” in the country, an achievement he described as remarkable given the absence of a fully functional airport. He added that the ongoing expansion of Umroi Airport, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, would be a “game changer” for the state’s tourism sector.
The minister revealed that discussions are also underway with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation on further enhancing connectivity, including the development of heliport facilities and integrating Sohra (Cherrapunji) into the state’s wider tourism circuit.
Highlighting upcoming investments in hospitality, Lyngdoh said a new Lemon Tree Hotel is under construction at the old Polo ground site, while Shillong will add at least two more five-star hotels within the next three years. Other government-supported projects include a new State Museum, an experiential cave tourism project at Mawsynram, and niche attractions designed to diversify visitor experiences.
On cultural events, Lyngdoh confirmed that the Shillong Literary Festival will take place from November 20–22, 2025, with final details on authors and speakers expected shortly. He also said the dates of the much-anticipated Me·gong Festival are under review and will be announced soon.
The minister underscored the economic impact of tourism festivals, noting that in Sohra alone more than 500 homestays have been established, directly benefiting thousands of families. “These festivals are not just celebrations; they are economic investments to boost growth so that we can reinvest in vital sectors,” Lyngdoh said.
