Shillong, October 23: The 31st State Karate Championship 2025 commenced today at the J.N. Indoor Stadium, Polo, amid an energetic display of talent and spirit from young karatekas across Meghalaya.
Organised by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) with support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, the three-day championship has drawn 512 participants from eight districts — a notable increase from the 456 karatekas who took part last year, AMKA President Hunlang Lytan said.
The opening ceremony began with a minute’s silence in memory of Stephan Leong, AMKA’s founder, whose death anniversary coincides with the event. Leong, who passed away on October 23, 2011, is fondly remembered for his pioneering role in promoting karate in Meghalaya and across the North East.
The Chief Guest, Commissioner and Secretary Matsiewdor War Nongbri, IAS, and the Guest of Honour, Pynbianglang Laloo, Joint Secretary of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, graced the occasion.

A former archer and noted sports administrator, War Nongbri lauded AMKA for its enduring commitment to nurturing karate talent in the state.
“Karate has put down deep roots in our state. Many associations are yet to host even one state championship, but AMKA has successfully organised it 31 times now,” she remarked.
She also shared words of advice with the participants, emphasising time management, academic balance, and the need to find space for relaxation amid their rigorous training.
The hundreds of competing karatekas — ranging from beginners to national medalists — are divided into categories based on age and weight, with contests being held in both kumite (sparring) and kata (form demonstration) events.
The championship will continue over the next two days, showcasing the best of Meghalaya’s emerging martial arts talent.
