Shillong, Nov 3: In a move aimed at consolidating its presence in the Garo Hills region, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has constituted a dedicated committee to strengthen the party’s organizational structure and identify potential candidates for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said the newly formed committee has been entrusted with the task of scouting and recommending prospective candidates from various constituencies. The decision underscores the party’s proactive strategy to expand its footprint and bolster its grassroots connect in the Garo Hills.
“The committee will look into identifying suitable and interested candidates from their respective constituencies,” Lyngdoh stated, adding that the party is taking early measures to prepare for the polls.
When asked whether the Congress’s presence in the Garo Hills could pose a challenge, Lyngdoh maintained confidence in his party’s position.
“Politics is politics, but I don’t see any negative impact as far as UDP is concerned,” he remarked.
Currently, the UDP has one MDC representing the region, and Lyngdoh emphasized the importance of having elected representatives to effectively serve and address the needs of the people in their constituencies.
